Musings around AI and Design: fueling innovation and making the impossible real

When technology meets creative, fueling innovation we challenge the expected and embrace the impossibly-real.

NYFW Street Style Through Midjourney’s Lens

With September Fashion Week behind us, I tested Midjourney to see if AI could capture the energy, movement, light, and layered details that make New York street style photography an art.

I began with a cinematic prompt: a young Black woman striding briskly through SoHo, trench coat catching the air, stiletto heels striking against worn asphalt. I added grounding details—steel manhole covers, cracked crosswalk paint, scaffolding—and focused on light: moody late-afternoon shadows broken by golden highlights to create atmosphere.

The first outputs felt too posed, closer to campaign shots than fleeting street style. The backgrounds lacked grit, and the light fell flat. Shifting the prompt toward action verbs—walking, looking back, photographed mid-step—brought more immediacy.

The final images landed closer to my vision: a layered, atmospheric study of New York Fashion Week through an AI lens.
