Musings around AI and Design: fueling innovation and making the impossible real

When technology meets creative, fueling innovation we challenge the expected and embrace the impossibly-real.

AI Can Design the Dream. It Can’t Build the Room.

Everyone is racing to prove that AI can do the work. That’s the wrong conversation. The real shift is how fast it can expand it.

I used Midjourney to develop experiential renderings for a Starbucks project and the results were both impressive and revealing. AI was incredibly effective at generating mood, materials, storytelling, and spatial concepts with speed that would have taken hours through traditional rendering workflows. It also handled iterative revisions well, maintaining visual consistency across multiple rounds of exploration. Where it broke down was scale.

Even with highly detailed prompts and exact footprint dimensions, the environments consistently came back oversized and architecturally unrealistic. The concepts looked cinematic, but not necessarily buildable. AI understands aspiration far better than physical limitation. That’s the current gap, AI is an exceptional tool for ideation, visualization, and creative acceleration, but it still lacks the practical understanding required for production ready execution.

Technology is moving fast. Knowing where to push it and where not to trust it is the creative’s job.
